The World Boxing Council tweeted out the news the showdown would be taking place on August 31, with the O2 the likeliest venue for the clash.

However, Lomachenko’s fellow London 2012 Olympic gold medalist Campbell quickly took to social media himself.

He wrote: “Don’t believe everything you read on social media.

“The fight is not confirmed yet. Stay tuned, real fight news coming soon!”

Lomachenko will put his gold straps on the line as well as battle for the vacant WBC lightweight belt after Mikey Garcia vacated it.

Campbell suffered defeat to Jorge Linares back in 2017.

But he has bounced back with three back-to-back wins against Troy James, Yvan Mendy and Adrian Yung, winning two by stoppage.

Pound-for pound king Lomachenko was last in action in April.

The 31-year-old Ukrainian WBA and WBO champ proved too much for Anthony Crolla in Los Angeles as he down him with a vicious right hook in the fourth.
